Summer Research 2017: Week 12
Sunday-Tuesday:
So far this week I continued my literary review for DDoS attack and defense publications, contributed to writing our final report, and worked on VR tutorials for the Unity game engine. I began by reviewing "A Cloud-Based Openflow Firewall For Mitigation Against DDoS Attacks In Smart Grid AMI Networks" by R.C.Diovu and J.T Agee. This paper proposes a cloud-based (IaaS) firewall for the mitigation of DDoS attacks in a smart grid AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) network. The proposed firewall has the ability of not only mitigating the effects of DDoS attacks, but also preventing the attack before they are launched. Overall, the firewall system they describe leverages on cloud computing technology, which has an added advantage of "reducing the burden of data computations and storage for smart grid AMI back-end systems." I found this to be very relevant to our project because it describes a current/future technology, cloud computing, that brings new possibilities and issues with DDoS-ing. This is something to take into consideration when creating our game to show defending against the most current threats to cybersecurity.
I also contributed to our final report by writing about the analysis of our game at its current state. This includes the log information we gained which represents the game's effectiveness as a teaching tool. Lastly, I did the first 3 tutorials of Unity's VR section. This included "Getting Started with VR Development", "Interaction in VR", and "User Interfaces for VR". Each of these tutorials built on one another, introducing developing scenes for VR, scaling objects correctly for perspective in a VR headset, and making menus and other UIs for VR.
